What Is a Virtual IOP?

A Virtual IOP (Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program) is a structured addiction treatment program delivered entirely online through a secure video platform. It provides the same clinical depth as an in-person intensive outpatient program, group therapy, individual counseling, psychoeducation, relapse prevention, and skills development without requiring you to attend in person.

Virtual IOP sits between outpatient therapy and a Day/Night Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) on the level-of-care spectrum. It is more structured and clinically intensive than standard weekly therapy (which might involve one or two sessions per week), but more flexible than residential or day/night programs that require your full daily schedule or an overnight stay. For people who need more support than traditional weekly therapy offers but who have a stable home environment and can manage daily responsibilities, a virtual intensive outpatient program is often the ideal fit.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), approximately 48.7 million Americans aged 12 or older had a substance use disorder in the past year, yet fewer than 25 percent received any form of treatment. Accessibility barriers, including distance, schedule, cost, and stigma, are among the most commonly cited reasons people delay care. Virtual IOP directly addresses all of these barriers.

Riverside Recovery's Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program

Riverside Recovery’s virtual IOP is not a watered-down version of treatment built for convenience. It is the same clinical program, delivered by the same licensed therapists and addiction counselors, with the same evidence-based treatment structure, just delivered through a secure online platform rather than in our Tampa facility.

Our Medical Director, Dr. Michael Sore, MD, oversees the clinical protocols for our virtual program. Every client begins with a comprehensive assessment before their first session, which covers substance use history, any co-occurring mental health conditions, current living situation, and schedule constraints. That assessment shapes a personalized treatment plan, not a one-size-fits-all track, but a program built around you specifically.

Sessions meet three evenings per week, a schedule designed to integrate with work, school, and family life. You’ll connect with a consistent group of peers in guided group therapy, participate in evidence-based clinical sessions, and have bi-weekly individual therapy available upon request throughout your program. The virtual format preserves the group dynamic that makes IOP effective for people in similar situations, working through similar challenges together while eliminating the access barriers that keep too many people out of treatment.

Riverside Recovery holds Joint Commission Gold Seal accreditation and CARF certification. These are the same accreditation standards that apply to our in-person programs and that insurance plans require when authorizing coverage for outpatient treatment.

Active participation in 12-step meetings and working toward obtaining a sponsor are requirements of our virtual IOP program. These aren’t optional additions; they’re clinical components that support accountability and community outside of scheduled sessions. If you’re new to 12-step programs or have questions about how this works alongside the virtual format, your treatment team will walk you through it from day one.

PHP · IOP · Standard Outpatient
Three levels. One clinical team. Your history, your treatment plan, and your therapeutic relationships carry through every transition without resetting.

What's Included in Our Online Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Virtual Group Therapy

Group therapy is the core of any IOP program, and Riverside Recovery’s online IOP is no different. In structured group sessions, you’ll work through shared experiences, build accountability, and develop the kind of peer support that research consistently shows improves long-term recovery outcomes. Sessions are facilitated by licensed therapists and limited in size to preserve meaningful therapeutic engagement. You’re not a face on a large screen; you’re an active participant in a real clinical group.

Individual Counseling

Bi-weekly individual addiction therapy sessions with a licensed therapist are available to all virtual IOP clients upon request. This is where the deeper personal work happens, exploring the underlying patterns, traumas, and triggers that drive substance use. Individual sessions are scheduled around group programming and provide private space to address topics that may not come up in a group setting. If individual therapy is something you want as part of your program, your treatment team will coordinate scheduling from the start.

CBT and DBT Skills Training

Our online IOP classes incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as primary frameworks. CBT sessions help you identify and interrupt the thought patterns that lead to use. DBT skills training, including distress tolerance, emotional regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness, provides the practical toolkit that carries people through high-risk moments in daily life. Both modalities are evidence- based, skills-focused, and especially well-suited to the online format because they produce tools you use outside of sessions.

Relapse Prevention Planning

Every session integrates relapse prevention work. You’ll identify your personal triggers, build a concrete response plan for high-risk situations, and practice applying relapse prevention strategies in real-world scenarios you’re currently navigating. Because virtual IOP is delivered while you’re actively living your daily life, relapse prevention isn’t theoretical. It’s applied in real time.

Psychoeducation

Structured educational sessions cover the science of addiction, how the brain responds to substances, the role of mental health in substance use, and the evidence behind different treatment approaches. Understanding what’s happening physiologically and psychologically is one of the most underrated tools in early recovery.

Virtual Family Counseling (Optional)

Recovery affects the whole household. Optional virtual family counseling sessions are available to help family members understand the recovery process, improve communication, and rebuild trust.

Drug Screening

Random drug screening is a standard component of our virtual IOP program. Electronic screening orders are sent to a local lab of your choosing, with a 48-hour window for completion to each screen. Drug screening supports accountability and is a clinical requirement of the program, not an optional add-on. Our admissions team will walk you through the process and answer any questions before your first session.

Attendance Requirements

Virtual IOP requires consistent participation to be clinically effective. A maximum of three unexcused absences is permitted. Clients who exceed this threshold are discharged from the program. Missed sessions can be made up, and our team will work with you if a legitimate scheduling conflict arises. If you’re concerned about your ability to attend consistently, that’s worth discussing with our admissions team before enrollment so we can identify the right level of care for your situation.

Who Is Virtual IOP Right For?

Our online intensive outpatient program is appropriate for a wide range of people at different points in their recovery journey. You may be a good candidate for virtual IOP if you:

  • Have completed medical detox or residential treatment and need continued structured support as you transition to independent living.
  • Are stepping down from our Day/Night Program (PHP) and want to maintain clinical structure while resuming daily responsibilities.
  • Have a stable home environment and support system, and are motivated to engage in recovery work consistently.
  • Cannot attend in-person treatment due to work schedule, location, childcare, transportation, or other daily responsibilities.
  • Have a mild to moderate substance use disorder and are beginning treatment without a prior residential stay.
  • Are you managing a dual diagnosis treatment, such as depression, anxiety, or PTSD, alongside substance use, and need more support than standard weekly therapy provides?

When a Higher Level of Care May Be Needed

Virtual IOP is not appropriate for everyone. If you are currently in acute withdrawal, require medical supervision, or have a severe substance use disorder with significant safety concerns, a higher level of care is the appropriate starting point.

Medical detox or residential treatment provides the structure and clinical oversight needed before stepping down to an outpatient program.

If you are unsure where you fall, our admissions team will help you determine the right level of care through a confidential assessment. There is no obligation, and no pressure. The goal is simply to make sure you start in the right place so that treatment works.

Step-by-Step Process

How to Get Started with Virtual IOP at Riverside Recovery

Starting a virtual IOP program with Riverside Recovery is designed to be as straightforward as possible. Here is what the process looks like from your first call to your first session.

01

Contact Admissions

Call (800) 871-5440 or (800) 871-5440, or use our online form to reach our admissions team. We are available 24/7 and ready to help you take the first step.

02

Insurance Verification

Our admissions team verifies your insurance benefits in real time on the same call. We will confirm what is covered, explain any out-of-pocket costs, and answer questions about your plan before you commit to anything.

03

Clinical Assessment

Before your first session, you will complete a comprehensive clinical assessment with one of our licensed clinicians. This covers your substance use history, mental health, living situation, and schedule so we can build a personalized treatment plan.

04

Technology Setup

Our virtual IOP runs on Zoom. All you need is a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a working camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection, and a private space to participate without interruption. If you are not already set up, our team will walk you through it before your first session.

05

Know Before You Log On

Sessions begin at 6:00 pm. The late admission cutoff is 6:10 pm — joining after that time means you will not be admitted to that session. Plan to log on a few minutes early, especially for your first night.

06

First Session & Ongoing Schedule

You will join your first virtual group therapy session with your licensed therapist and cohort. From there, sessions run three evenings per week. Most clients are able to begin within a few days of their initial contact.

Virtual IOP vs. In-Person IOP at Riverside Recovery

Riverside Recovery offers both in-person and virtual intensive outpatient options. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right fit.

Our in-person IOP offers two schedule tracks at our Tampa facility. The morning track runs Monday through Friday, 9 am to 12 pm, five days per week for clients who want maximum clinical contact. The evening track runs Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 6 pm to 9 pm, and is designed for clients managing work or family commitments during the day. In-person clients also have access to our on-site amenities, including our gym, pool, and waterfront campus along the Hillsborough River.

Our virtual IOP meets Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, 6 pm to 9 pm, through a secure Zoom platform. It delivers the same evidence-based clinical programming, facilitated by the same licensed staff, with fully remote access from anywhere in Florida. It is the right fit for clients who cannot attend in person due to distance, schedule, transportation, or other life circumstances.

Both programs carry the same accreditation standards and clinical approach. The right choice depends on your clinical needs, your schedule, and whether in-person access is realistic for you.

Insurance Coverage for Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Most private insurance plans cover virtual IOP under the same mental health parity requirements that apply to in-person addiction treatment. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires insurers to cover substance use disorder treatment, including virtual intensive outpatient programs at parity with other medical benefits. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth and virtual mental health coverage expanded significantly across most major carriers, and those expansions have largely been maintained.

Riverside Recovery is in-network with most major private insurance plans and works directly with benefits administrators to maximize your coverage. Call our admissions team or use our free online insurance verification tool to confirm your specific benefits before your first session. We’ll handle the insurance side so you can focus on recovery.
