Day/Night Treatment

The Day/Night Program, also called a Partial Hospitalization Program, is offered Monday through Saturday, 8am–4pm. Participants live offsite and attend programming as clinically appropriate.

Our Day/Night Program is designed as a step down from our full-time Residential Program so clients can explore independence part-time while maintaining an intensive recovery-oriented schedule. Clients in day/night treatment at Riverside Recovery attend structured clinical sessions Monday through Saturday, with evenings and Sundays off. Clinical programming includes individual, group and family therapy; psycho-education; life skills and therapeutic physical activity. The goal is to allow clients to demonstrate their ability to live in the community or at sober living facilities without removing all support at once.

Riverside Recovery Day/Night Program Overview:

  • 25 hours of group counseling per week
  • Individual counseling on a weekly basis
  • Structured daily activities that coincide with the residential treatment schedule
  • Encouraged to attend daily recovery-based support groups (including 12 step groups, AA, NA, Celebrate Recovery and/or SMART Recovery)
  • Medical and Psychiatric care provided as needed
  • Daily breathalyzers and random urinalysis to improve overall accountability
Day/Night Program participants will start the day with mindful meditation, followed by goal setting to ensure they are focused, calm and centered. Then, each day is filled with a unique blend of individual, group and/or family therapies. Each therapy session is aimed at helping clients hone their recovery skills and work through ongoing personal or mental health concerns. Our psychoeducation groups are often focused on different topics. Many of which build upon topics that will be familiar from our Residential Program, while others introduce new ideas or approaches intended to help the client integrate into independent life. Day/night participants also engage in physical activities and fitness therapies that are proven to help boost mood, improve health in the long term and instill healthy habits that clients can utilize outside of our treatment center.

Program Care Overview

Individual Psychotherapy

Day/Night Program participants will take part in at least one hour of weekly individual psychotherapy with a therapist in order to address the following:
  • Triggers for substance use
  • Family dynamics that may or may not contribute to a maladaptive pattern of substance use
  • Setting boundaries that lead to long term recovery and healthy relationships going forward, and how to manage emotional dysregulation
These one-on-one sessions are essential for our team to help each client work through the aspects of their addiction that are unique to their background and experiences. In addition, these sessions aid the participant in the development of personalized distress tolerance skills that take the place of mind and mood-altering substances in a way that fits into the client’s own lifestyle.

Process Groups

Day/Night Program participants will also attend various process groups throughout the week where they come together with others to share what they are struggling with while in treatment. They will receive supportive feedback in conjunction with the guidance and facilitation of a clinician. The information presented addresses:
  • The identification of triggers and behavioral and thinking errors
  • Introduction and development of skills to remain sober
  • Relapse prevention planning
  • Self-awareness
  • Basic skills in managing emotions and thought processes
  • Basic communication skills
  • Spirituality
  • Mental and emotional health issues
Most of our process group sessions are co-educational and encourage bonding between all members of our day/night community. One time per week, participants attend a gender-specific process group to share and connect with same-gender peers.

Family Therapy

Family therapy is offered for day/night clients as clinically appropriate. We strongly encourage participants whose family members are local and supportive to take advantage of our family therapy offerings. Our family programming is very highly regarded and has an impressive track record of guiding clients to sustainable recovery. We welcome biological family members and chosen family members (e.g., very close friends who the client considers family) to participate. Family therapy sessions will address:
  • The effect of the disease of addiction on the family unit as a whole
  • Psychoeducation about how to assist a loved one battling the disease
  • Boundary setting and enforcing
  • Maintaining the mental, physical and spiritual wellness of family members

Psychoeducation Groups

Day/Night treatment participants participate in weekly psychoeducation groups

Day/Night Treatment Program (Partial Hospitalization)

Relapse Prevention

Participants will learn about the phases of relapse and how to combat relapse when cravings hit. They will also begin to get a better idea of what a relapse prevention plan entails. Development of an individual relapse prevention plan will occur one on one with the participant’s therapist.

Day/Night Treatment Program (Partial Hospitalization)

Trauma

This group will address what trauma is, how it presents and what it looks like. It will also provide a general guideline for what is necessary to treat trauma, especially with a co-morbid substance use disorder.

Additional Groups

Recovery and Technology

This group will utilize various forms of technology (apps, YouTube, movies, etc.) as a way to address and educate participants about the disease of addiction.

Physiology of Addiction

Participants will gain better insight into the biological differences in the brain of addicts/alcoholics, in order to help reduce the stigma and shame surrounding the disease of addiction.

Spirituality Group

Participants will learn about inclusive spirituality, in the absence of any specific religion or denomination. They will explore what they consider to be a higher power or anything outside of themselves that brings them peace and comfort. Topics such as mindfulness and meditation will also be discussed.

Disease Concept

Participants will learn how the disease of addiction manifests in mind, body, and spirit. This group will cover the mental obsession, physical craving, and spiritual bankruptcy that addiction causes when active. Participants will gain a better understanding of how the disease manifests in their daily lives, specifically in maladaptive thinking patterns.

Life Skills

Participants will learn how to best manage their time efficiently so that they can become productive members of society. With an emphasis on discipline, positive habit forming, and accountability, topics covered will include, but not be limited to, daily living skills, following a schedule, nutrition, money management, and employment skills.

Coping Skills

Participants will gain skills to use in place of mind and mood-altering substances when experiencing a variety of life stressors, including distressing emotions that may have historically lead to substance use. Participants will gain a better understanding of various emotions, along with how to identify what they are feeling and articulate emotions effectively to others. They will also learn the importance of asking for help and support when feeling emotionally dysregulated.

Physical Training & Exercise

Participants will benefit from both individual and group sessions to address health and fitness needs. Exercise programs are designed to meet participants where they are physically and include but are not limited to, high-intensity interval training, yoga, and water aerobics.
