How Can I Start Believing in Myself More?

Those of us living with addictions and mental health issues often share in common belief systems based on low self-esteem and shame. We believe we are inadequate and inferior to other people. We believe that we are a failure, that the mistakes and regrets of our past dictate who we are. We believe that we can’t heal and that we are doomed to suffer forever.

We can change the beliefs we have developed, however, and transform them into new, more empowering beliefs. We can choose our thoughts more consciously and create beliefs that lift us up rather than bring us down, that help us in our recovery rather than hinder our progress. This process can be transformational and joyful. As we do this important emotional work, we begin to see the results of our new belief systems – more happiness, increased emotional resilience to work through challenges, and greater confidence and self-empowerment. How do we begin?

Changing our beliefs requires reprogramming our subconscious minds which govern the vast majority of our thoughts and behaviors. The subconscious mind responds to repetition, so let’s choose new beliefs with which to program our minds and use repetition to solidify them. Creating, writing and repeating affirmations is a simple but powerful healing tool we can use in our recovery. When we infuse our affirmations with the energy of our emotion and really try to believe them, we allow ourselves to tap into the amazing transformational power of healing that we carry within ourselves.

I am more than good enough. I believe in myself. My higher power sees my perfection and believes in my goodness. I am perfect the way I am; I am growing, changing and improving, but still perfect. I value myself. I am strong. I am capable. I am powerful. I have the strength and the power to heal myself. I am a light in this world. I am a gift and a blessing to this world.

When we are in the midst of our difficulties, these words may feel distant, foreign and untrue. We may feel like we’re lying to ourselves. Try to tap into your inner power that is full of healing, love, compassion and understanding. Choose affirmations that resonate with you, that reflect the truths you want to instill within yourself. As you do this, visualize your entire being surrounded by a beautiful healing light. Allow your words and your light to bring you calm, peace and strength. Allow yourself to be empowered. As you work to believe in yourself more, you open yourself up to healing, and that is a beautiful thing!
