Too many of us have known or been connected to someone who took their own life, and the tragedy of it stays with us forever. Many of us want to find a way to address suicide within our families and communities, to communicate important things to our loved ones who might be suffering before it’s too late. We sometimes don’t know how to broach the subject. It’s painful and complicated, and we don’t want to say the wrong thing. We want to be sensitive to people’s issues, particularly their depression and other mental health issues, as well as their own experiences with having lost loved ones. The truth is, there is no right or wrong answer. All we can do is speak from our heart.
To all the young people who need to hear this, and anyone who might be suffering, you are not alone. You are never alone. Even in your darkest times, when you feel most isolated and separate from other people, there is always someone who cares about you – even if you haven’t met that person yet. Your new best friend or soulmate or miracle worker could be right around the corner waiting to walk into your life any minute. Don’t give up on yourself because you think no one loves you, because you are loved. You are loved by your higher power, by your ancestors, and by the stranger writing this right now.
You’re also never alone because the world is full of people who right now at this very minute feel the exact same way you do. Countless people, probably millions, are struggling with suicidal thoughts, depression, self-hate and feelings of unworthiness. So many of us at one point or another have considered taking our own lives, and it was through the act of summoning our inner strength and courage that we survived. You can survive too. You can go on to do wonderful things in your life. You can create miracles, both for yourself and for others. You never know who you will help, or how you will serve. Life can change in an instant. Your dreams could come true tomorrow. Don’t give up when there is so much to live for. One of these days, you’ll see the sun shining and feel its warmth on your face and be glad and grateful you didn’t give up. One of these days, you’re going to meet the love of your life or hold your precious baby in your arms and be so glad and grateful you didn’t give up.
