Finding the Best Recovery Program

There’s a lot to think about when making the decision to enter treatment. Here are a few things to consider.

When we’re truly ready to do the work to recover, it’s easy to feel confused and overwhelmed in the search for the best treatment facility to meet our needs. The process can be daunting, scary, and frustrating, especially when we don’t have any experience researching addiction recovery programs. We want to make sure we know what our needs are when it comes to our recovery so that we can find a good match for us.

One of the most important things to look for when researching facilities is whether or not they specialize in the particular issues you’re struggling with. Some facilities, for example, handle only substance abuse issues and not behavioral, or process addictions such as gambling addiction and sex addiction. You’ll want to find the treatment center that is well-equipped to help treat your specific addictions and conditions. Similarly, if you experience mental health issues along with your addictions, which are often treated as co-occurring disorders with dual diagnoses, you’ll want to look for a treatment center that treats both mental illness and addiction.

It can also be helpful to look at the different kinds of therapies offered. Many facilities offer creative arts therapy, recreational therapy, occupational therapy, and other programs designed to help us build life skills, learn coping strategies and develop lifestyles conducive to our sobriety. Many of us are looking for comprehensive treatment that helps us to heal holistically, so we will want to make sure to find the facility that can best help us achieve that. Many facilities offer yoga, meditation, energy healing, mindfulness education, and other programs.

You might also want to take a look at their family programming options. When we’re struggling with difficult family issues, especially issues that have been exacerbated by our addictions, we need support that helps our whole family heal as a unit and as individuals. Our loved ones are in recovery too. They have been experiencing all kinds of complex and difficult emotions related to our addictions, including anger, disappointment, frustration, worry, and sadness. They’ve had to stand by and watch us self-destruct during our addictive cycles. They might have struggled with patterns of enabling us and trying to stop. They may themselves be struggling with addiction issues. Many treatment centers offer family therapy in the form of workshops and educational programs that are designed to help us heal alongside our families.
