“One Day at a Time”: Nina’s Journey Back to Sobriety

My name is Nina and I’m an alcoholic. I’ve been sober since January 3, 2020.

Recovery and staying sober has not been easy, but it’s attainable if you are open and receptive. Using all the tools and resources available during and after the program is key.

The first time I came to Riverside was in September 2018. My children researched multiple facilities and eventually chose Riverside for its myriads of services.  They were impressed by Riverside’s curriculum and its holistic treatment approach. With medication management, mental health therapy, meditation, prayer, exercise, and yoga, I felt wrapped in support. This is an amazing, clean, safe and wonderful environment to be vulnerable in and come back to center.

Despite the care I received and the tools I gained, I found myself back at Riverside in 2020 by my own accord. I had relapsed and knew I needed help. There was no doubt in my mind that Riverside Recovery was where I needed to be. This time around, I made sure I attended all the classes, took notes, and joined every type of therapy offered. This time it was on my own terms, and I was committed to a full recovery. I found an amazing sponsor who guided me through my 12 steps with unwavering support. I went to every meeting possible, finding the ones I felt comfortable in and enjoyed the most. Just like I’ve met some wonderful people in my sobriety journey, I’ve unfortunately lost some as well. However, what keeps me moving forward is my love for life, my love for this reality, and my family and friends.

Not everyone is going to forgive what you have done, but most will see the change and will assist you in your sobriety journey. I’ve learned, in order to enjoy life in sobriety, you must learn to forgive yourself first and have a desire to change, be clean, be sober, and want it so bad you can taste and feel it.

I still remind myself to take it one day at a time and somedays it’s one hour at a time. Most importantly, my advice to anyone who finds themselves in recovery is to make sure to use the tools Riverside Recovery gives you to continue your journey.

I’m eternally grateful to this program and to the Riverside Recovery team!
