Chris’ Recovery from Alcoholism: “Life is Good”

The following was written by Chris, a Riverside Recovery alumnus, and has been lightly edited for web format.

My drinking career was a slow-growing process, which took many years to turn me into the ‘blackout artist’ whose spouse walked out on. I went from weekend partying and wearing being the last one standing as a badge of honor, to a two handles per weekend drinker. Those weekends always ended in memory loss of what the previous night entailed, and it was never enough.

I “graduated” to drinking daily and drank every morning, during work and in the evening. The crash was life-shattering.

I finally reached my rock bottom on April 20, 2023, and checked myself into Riverside. I threw myself into learning and participating in all that they had to offer. They taught me the science behind my addiction and provided therapy, AA meetings, yoga, Reiki, and other amazing tools. It all helped me build a great life, way better than the chaos I used to know.

Now, things are calm, and I have a direction and meaning. Experiencing old things again with a sober mind and body is the greatest gift to myself and those around me. Regular AA meetings and service work keep me armored up and ready to take on all that life may throw my way, no longer hiding behind the bottle. Life is good.
