When we are in the thick of our addictions, we often can’t see our way out. We’ve lost hope in ourselves and in the possibility of recovery. We feel despair and desperation, and recovery can feel like a distant, impossible ideal that we will never realistically be able to attain. Can we hope to recover? If we look at all the success stories of people who have recovered and gone on to live healthy lives after struggling for years with their addictions, we can answer this question with a hopeful Yes!

Recovery is not easy, but it is possible. Recovery asks that we face our deepest fears, our darkest hurts, our unhealed wounds and unresolved issues. It asks that we muster all of our courage to do some of the hardest emotional work we’ll ever do in our lives. It asks that we embrace ourselves with self-love and self-compassion in order to do this very important work.

Being successful in recovery starts with developing the belief that we can recover. If we don’t believe in our ability to recover, we are putting our energy not into the power of healing but into the limitations of our fears. Let’s try to confront our self-doubt and fearful limiting beliefs by noticing when they arise, when our inner voice is speaking from fear. Once we’re conscious of our fears, let’s work to reprogram our subconscious minds to heal these fears and grow in faith and self-love. We can use the power of affirmations and self-hypnosis to do this.

I believe in myself. I believe in my strength. I believe I can recover. I am strong enough to recover. I am infinitely powerful. My higher power is supporting me and guiding me in my recovery.

Self-love, self-compassion, self-acceptance, self-forgiveness, self-respect are all necessary for true recovery. Without them, we are susceptible to the same self-destructiveness that has driven our addictions for all these years.

I love myself. I offer myself my compassion and understanding. I accept myself. I forgive myself. I respect myself.

Work to really believe you can recover. When self-doubt and fear arise, as they inevitably will, try to counter them with the new beliefs you’re creating for yourself. Meditate on these new beliefs of empowerment and strength. Journal about them and about your fears. Keep repeating your affirmations to instill their meaning within you. You are powerful beyond measure. You have the power to heal yourself.
