Our struggles with addiction can cause us to totally lose sight of our values, our principles, our self-worth and our sense of self. We lose our conviction to live a life of purpose and integrity. We don’t feel clear within ourselves, at peace or aligned. We make the important choice as we’re healing to recover our sense of dignity and integrity. We decide to reconnect with our true selves. We work to get quiet and still within ourselves, to hear the voice of our intuition and allow ourselves to be guided by it. We incorporate meditation, introspection and self-reflection into our recovery work. We decide that we want to live a life we can be proud of and happy about. We want to be able to live with ourselves and not be haunted by our guilty conscience, our shamefulness, and our memories of regret. We want to be free to pursue our dreams and live out our life’s mission without constantly feeling as though our past will come back to haunt us.
At one point, before our addictions set in and completely took over our lives, we felt connected to ourselves, aligned, grounded and at peace. We knew our internal moral compass would never lead us astray. We had faith in ourselves and trusted our instincts. The onset of our addictions overpowered us and made us doubt ourselves. Our addictions and our dependence on harmful substances and behaviors can cause us to do things we’re ashamed of, things we never thought we’d do. Suddenly we’re living lives that feel completely foreign and unfamiliar to us. We don’t recognize ourselves. Our sense of integrity feels as though it’s totally lost to us. We don’t know what to do, where to turn or how to redeem ourselves.
Sobriety helps us reconnect with our true selves and become reacquainted with our inner light, our life’s mission, and our purpose. We’re able to make decisions from a place of clarity, groundedness and alignment. We know our direction in life again and how to follow our intuition. We make choices that are healthy for us, that we’re proud of, and that we can feel good about. We start to repair our damaged self-esteem and our lacking sense of self-worth. The more we focus on cultivating integrity within ourselves and making it a guiding principle in our lives, the better we feel about ourselves, the more we feel redemption is possible for us. In this place of self-love, self-respect and integrity, we’re far better able to heal and transform ourselves.
